Hillary Sexism Watch

Sen. Hillary Clinton has not only faced her Democratic opponents, but the media as well. Melissa McEwan at Shakesville has documented just SOME of the misogynistic attacks on Hillary.

With an influx of new readers looking for coverage of the campaign that includes calling out incidents of misogynistic attacks on Hillary, I thought it might be useful to do a quick round-up of previous posts on the subject. I figured there would be twenty or so...

Parts One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten, Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen, Fourteen, Fifteen, Sixteen, Seventeen, Eighteen, Nineteen, Twenty, Twenty-One, Twenty-Two, Twenty-Three, Twenty-Four, Twenty-Five, Twenty-Six, Twenty-Seven, Twenty-Eight, Twenty-Nine, Thirty, Thirty-One, Thirty-Two, Thirty-Three, Thirty-Four, Thirty-Five, Thirty-Six, Thirty-Seven, Thirty-Eight, Thirty-Nine, Forty, Forty-One, Forty-Two, Forty-Three, Forty-Four, Forty-Five, Forty-Six, Forty-Seven, Forty-Eight, Forty-Nine, Fifty, Fifty-One, Fifty-Two, Fifty-Three, Fifty-Four, Fifty-Five, Fifty-Six, Fifty-Seven, Fifty-Eight, Fifty-Nine, Sixty, Sixty-One, Sixty-Two.

Um, yeah.
Thanks, Melissa.

I just went through the first four and stopped at that because I just become more and more angry. I'm so fed up with this garbage and frankly, I'm ashamed of all the young women who are flocking around Barack Obama when they have the choice of an intelligent woman who could actually make strides for them and their future daughters. This kind of thing is going to continue and women will be looked down on as second class citizens as long as the media is allowed to get away with this stuff.

It sickens me....

Mary Ellen, most people are not (or weren't until her vote/lack there-of today in my case) voting AGAINST Clinton or feminism. Most people are voting FOR the candidate they most agree with.

These issues do need to be addressed. But a female president, in and of herself, is not going to immediately change that any more than a black president will end racism.

If they are making money while making these statements, they will continue - no matter who is elected president. The only thing that speaks to these people is money. Attack their money sources like what Sharpton et. al. did with Imus and they will begin to listen.

john j- the fact is, race and gender are a big factor in this election, however, it isn't politically acceptable or correct to make a racist remark on tv, but for some reason, it's ok to make a sexist remark. For instance, when those guys stood up at one of Hillary's rallies and said "Iron my shirt", it was all over the news and many in the media were chuckling about it. If those same guys stood up at an Obama rally and said "Shine my shoes", the outrage would have been palatable. It's ok to bash women and hold them to a higher standard in this society and until there is a woman in the highest office, that will continue.

I also have to say it...most of the younger voters are voting for Obama because he inspires them with his speeches not because they know a lick about the issues. Older women are looking at issues that are important to them...health care, equal pay, the economy, and the war. The reason why Hillary is leading in the older women vote is because we have been the victims of unequal pay and being held to a higher standard in order to "make it" in the work world. Younger girls who are still in college have no idea what it's like out there yet...they'll find out.

Mary Ellen - You're correct and John doesn't know what he's talking about. He wasn't around for Shirley Chisholm's presidential bid, where she said "I met far more discrimination because I am a woman than because I am black."

Hillary has had to run against not only her male competitors, but the mainstream media as well.

I don't know why you two didn't bother even reading my comment, but I never said anywhere whether or not Clinton has it worse than Obama.

My only statement is that electing Clinton as president will not, under any circumstances, stop these statements. They will only stop when they begin to cost the media outlets money.

Please read what I said before attacking me for agreeing with you.

I'm so glad you're pointing these instances out. A few months back, I was working on a "misogyny is more prevalent than racism" post, and it just got overwhelming. I'm really frightened that we'll end up with Mr. Feel-Good rather than an experienced and intelligent candidate who has a true grasp of the issues.
