Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State

Is Hillary Clinton heading for Secretary of State? Maybe, at least that's what NBC News and the Washington Post are reporting.

The Washington Post reports:

There's increasing chatter in political circles that the Obama camp is not overly happy with the usual suspects for Secretary of State these days and that the field may be expanding somewhat beyond Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), Gov. Bill Richardson (D-N.M.), Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) and maybe former Democratic senator Sam Nunn of Georgia.

There's talk, indeed, that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) may now be under consideration for the post. Her office referred any questions to the Obama transition; Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor declined to comment.

The pick of the former presidential contender and Senate Armed Services Committee member would go a long way toward healing any remaining divisions within the Democratic Party after the divisive primaries. Also, Clinton has long been known for her work on international women's issues and human rights. The former first lady could also enhance Obama's efforts to restore U.S. standing amongst allies worldwide.
Laura Rozen at Mother Jones has this to say.

Taylor Marsh talks about the strong message it would send to world leaders.

As a "Hill grrl" I think the Senator would be great as Secretary of State. And for all the reasons mentioned by Rozen and Marsh, I think it would be a wonderful selection. As we watch the Republican party implode, it would be nice to see two of the strongest Democrats coming together.

He's not choosing her
Just doing it to make it look like he's reaching out

I think it would be great if he chose Hillary. I thought of that way back in the beginning, that that would be a good place for her. I think she should be in the new administration and that seems like the right position for her.

I think that Sen. Clinton would make a great Secretary of State. We shall see...

It's an interesting idea and I think Hillary would make an excellent Secretary of State. I wonder, though, how does that affect any of her future plans?

I have to admit, I didn't see that one coming. DCup, I think it would only give her more options for the future, don't you?

I agree that she would do really well as SoS and Sue J and DCup are both right that it would advance future political interests. But I have always seen her credentials leading more toward Health and Human Services, leading the charge on universal health care, or Attorney General, both seats where she far outshines any potential competition (except maybe Claire McCaskill for AG).

If Richardson is being dropped from contention, as the article suspects, she is much more qualified than Kerry and more reliable than Hagel.

It seems that the Obama team is very good at letting lots of names leak and see which ones float and which ones sink (if I may mix my metaphors).

I have no problem with it, and as some news outlets have reported, if he appointed her Secretary of State Obama would largely have her and Bill out of his hair.

She's certainly qualified for the position.

If she wants it she should get it. She damned well earned it.

Kevin, I've seen that argument myself, but I don't understand how having her as his point person for all things outside the country gets them out of the way.
