Dog Day Afternoon

"This is why your mother says to wash your hands after handling money..." I just found this gem in the Washington Post.

It gives all new meaning to "dirty money" ... "money laundering" ... "wasteful spending" ...

What does this bring to mind for you?

Happy Birthday Bart!

Bart is nine years old today! He is the sweetest little guy you will ever meet! And he loved the birthday cookies he got this morning. I'm so glad he's part of our family.

The First Dog

Welcome Bo!

The new First Puppy's journey to the White House had a few twists and turns on the way!

Let's follow the trail.

The Obama puppy trail.

Why? Because it is our duty.

It starts at a doggie love shack on the bank of a creek in far western Pennsylvania and ends at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Along the way, the world's suddenly most famous puppy has had ups and downs. He has known rejection and the joy of newfound affection.

The White House tried hard, oh so hard, to keep 6-month-old Bo a secret. But the Obama girls' new pet, that cuter-than-cute Portuguese water dog with the lei around his neck, is a celeb now...
He began his journey as Amigo's New Hope, and then landed with a family in Washington who renamed him Charlie.

Eventually he was placed with a woman in Washington, Stern said. She renamed him Charlie. Alas, it wasn't to be a happy home.

The woman -- who has not been identified -- has an older Portie, Martha Stern said, and that playful little scamp Charlie was getting on the other dog's nerves. Charlie thought the older dog might be his mommy, and even attempted to nurse, Stern said. Finally, early in March, the woman decided enough was enough.

Charlie needed to find a new home.

Portie breeders tend to be a careful lot, and they insist on finding new homes for unwanted pups to assure they don't end up in shelters. Rejected by his first family, Charlie was about to set on a journey that took him to The First Family.
Charlie was tutored in good manners by Dawn Sylvia of Merit Puppy Training in Virginia.

This began the Super Secret phase of Charlie's life, which included a clandestine White House visit in which he won over the Obama girls and their parents. Then Easter weekend came, and his days of anonymity ended. The celebrity Web site TMZ.com, and The Washington Post published online pieces identifying the new White House puppy as a Portie. The Post disclosed that Sasha and Malia had renamed him Bo.
So the wait is over, the puppy is in place, and an election night promise fulfilled.

Pet Bonding

Just saw this on facebook and boy am I glad I don't subscribe to the New York Times. Can you imagine what would happen if Bart saw this? Yikes!

In Chicago, Kristyn Caliendo does forward-bends with a Jack Russell terrier draped around her neck. In Manhattan, Grace Yang strikes a warrior pose while balancing a Shih Tzu on her thigh. And in Seattle, Chantale Stiller-Anderson practices an asana that requires side-stretching across a 52-pound vizsla.

Call it a yogic twist: Downward-facing dog is no longer just for humans.

Ludicrous? Possibly. Grist for anyone who thinks that dog-owners have taken yoga too far? Perhaps. But nationwide, classes of doga — yoga with dogs, as it is called — are increasing in number and popularity. Since Ms. Caliendo, a certified yoga instructor in Chicago, began to teach doga less than one year ago, her classes have doubled in size.

Now I could get into a little doggie meditation. This looks quite comfortable. There is nothing better than cuddling with (wo)man's best friend!

But wait just a minute ... is that Bella?? Is she stepping out on me already??? Geezz ... is this what I get after three good years together?

Why I love dogs

Even in your darkest moment you can always count on your loyal companion to be there for you. That was the case for a young Colorado man.
A dog stood guard over her owner's body for up to six weeks after the man committed suicide on the remote northeastern Colorado plains, authorities said.

The body of 25-year-old Jake Baysinger of La Salle was found Sunday on the Pawnee National Grasslands about 75 miles northeast of Denver. Cash, his German shepherd, was found beside him, thin and dehydrated but still alive. The dog had apparently survived by eating mice and rabbits, authorities said.

The Weld County coroner ruled Baysinger's death a suicide. The cause of death wasn't immediately determined but authorities found a gun nearby, the coroner's office said Tuesday.

"At least we know it's over now," said Baysinger's wife, Sara. "We'd been looking for my husband for six weeks, and this isn't how we wanted it to end. At least we can close this."

Baysinger was reported missing June 28. An extensive search failed to locate him, but Kip Konig, a rancher, saw the dog last weekend, went to investigate and discovered Baysinger's body and his pickup.

He said Cash kept running back to the pickup and jumping into the front seat.

"I got the sense she was trying to tell me where her master was," Konig said.

Cash was reunited Monday with Sara Baysinger and her 2-year-old son, Lane. She said her little boy is "very close to that dog" and happy to see her again.

Investigators said the dog probably kept coyotes away from the body.
We may never know why Jake Baysinger apparently committed suicide, but we do know that his loyal dog Cash protected him to the bitter end.

I've had dogs most of my life, and they are truly your best friend. You can come home late and they still love you. You can barely be scraping by and they think you are a Goddess. A pat on the head, and a Scooby Snack, and they are yours forever.

Bella is getting her hair cut, while Bart is busy protecting me from the two guys painting my front porch. I love my little dogs.

Bringing Sexy Back

No, this is not a doggie blog, but ... Bella did go to a new pet salon and is now sporting quite a sexy set of eyebrows. Check 'em out!

She's walking around the house now like she owns the place.

Bart was impressed, but a little jealous of her spa day. To make it up to him, he got a bath last night. Not sure it was exactly what he had in mind, but there are now two clean puppies in the Yikes household.
