Dogs Unite!

stolen from jewgirl at all the way from oy to vey

I never ask ya's to sign petitions. Now, I'm akksin. Here's the dish and the URL:

"In 2007, the 'artist' Guillermo Vargas Habacuc, took a dog from the street, tied him to a rope in an art gallery, and starved him to death. For several days, the 'artist' and the visitors of the exhibition have watched emotionless the shameful 'masterpiece' based on the dog's agony, until eventually he died.

The prestigious Visual Arts Biennial of the Central American decided that the 'installation' was actually art, so that Guillermo Vargas Habacuc has been invited to repeat his cruel action for the biennial of 2008.

PLEASE HELP STOP HIM
http://www.petitiononline.com/ea6gk/petition.html

It's free of charge, there is no need to register, and it will only take 1 minute to save the life of an innocent creature.

Please, please, please sign this petition.
Yeah it's stolen ... so arrest me!

This is not a doggie blog ... but

Regular visitors to Yikes may have noticed that posting has been a bit lite lately. The reason is my most favorite dog Braco -- yes the others know -- is really ill. She is currently in the doggie hospital and may be there for a few days, so please send her good energy while she is recovering.

Bart and Bella are doing their best to keep me occupied. Bella is out rounding up the neighbors as I type.

Maybe I'll write something scathing about Bush ... that always makes me feel better!

Or maybe the pups and I will curl up in the big chair and tell ghost stories. That's Bart's favorite thing to do!

Happy Birthday Braco

Braco is "officially" 11 years old today. She is my oldest, and most beloved dog. Yes, the other two have accepted that I love her most. You see love is a wonderful thing ... you always have enough for everyone!

Braco has had a tough couple of years, and she is not completely out of the woods -- but she is doing much better.

The picture at the top is how she looks now. I love her beautiful coat, it's so soft. And I love her coloring, she is just a gorgeous dog.

The picture to the right was taken about a year ago, when the vet was still trying to find out what was wrong. Her coat was so thin she was almost bald in spots -- and I was really worried.

The diagnosis was Cushing's Disease, and she is now on medicine that she will be taking for the rest of her life. Combine the Cushing's with her blindness, and related eye problems, and our counter looks like the local pharmacy.

But I don't mind, if it means I will have her for a few more years. After all, no matter how many other dogs I have Braco will always be "my baby."

Happy Birthday Braco ... and many, many more!

Free Iggy

iggy02.jpgTrying to do the right thing, comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres now finds herself in deep doo doo with Mutts and Moms. Ellen adopted Iggy, a cute little dog. She cared for Iggy to the best of her ability, and when it was clear the adoption was not going to work out she gave the dog to a loving family. The dog lived there for two weeks -- bonding with the two girls in the home, and they bonded with Iggy.

Ellen shares the story on her web site.

When Mutts and Moms called to check up on Iggy, Ellen didn't lie -- she told them the truth. And that's when the trouble started. It seems Ellen had signed an agreement saying that she would not give the dog away. Mutts and Moms, claiming Ellen violated the contract, demanded the dog be returned.

They physically went over to Iggy's new home and carted Iggy back to the shelter.

iggy03sm.jpgNow you tell me. What would be best for Iggy -- to live with a family that loves him? Or, live in a dog shelter?

If you agree that Iggy should be returned to the family that loves him, email or call Mutts and Moms today. You can reach them at:

The web site is currently down, probably from too many hits! The questions to ask are: Why didn't Mutts and Moms simply interview the new family and let Iggy stay? Is going by the policy more important that what is in the best interest of the dog and the family?

Urge Mutts and Moms to SET IGGY FREE!

------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: A spokesperson for Mutts and Moms said "rules are rules" and that the adoption agency has no plans to turn over Iggy. Degeneres had given the dog to her hairdresser, who has two children. On Sunday Mutts and Moms came, police in tow, to retrieve the dog.

Despite an on-air plea from Degeneres, Mutts and Moms owner Marina Batkis "is not going to give them the dog."
... the Pasadena-based organization that has been the target of death and arson threats and calls for a boycott since DeGeneres' emotional retelling of the doggy dilemma on her talk show Tuesday, said that his client has no plans to return the four-month-old Brussels Griffon terrier mix to DeGeneres' hairdresser and her two young daughters. [...]

"[Batkis] doesn't think this is the type of family that should have the dog," Fink told the Associated Press. "She is adamant that she is not going to be bullied around by the Ellen DeGenereses of the world…They are using their power, position and wealth to try to get what it is they want."
Yeah, a decent home for a dog now living in a shelter. The NERVE of them. Geezzzz Someone should take Ellen and Portia out back and slap them! How dare they find a good home for a homeless little dog.

Dogs United for Seamus

As readers of this blog know, my mantra is "Don't agonize, organize!" Well, it seems a group of dogs have done just that. Dogs United, a group based in New Jersey, has organized a response to the news that presidential candidate Mitt Romney placed his family dog, an Irish setter named Seamus, into a kennel lashed to the top of his station wagon for a 12-hour family trip from Boston to Ontario in 1983.

Despite being shielded by a wind screen the former Massachusetts governor erected, Seamus expressed his discomfort with a diarrhea attack.

In a press release issued by the new organization, the group's leader -- who goes by the name "Killer" -- said a nationwide protest is being organized.

"What Mitt calls an example of crisis management, we call a really shi**y thing to do to 'man's best friend'," Killer said. The story touched off howls of outrage from animals and animal rights activists. Dogs from nearly every state are planning to make the trek to Massachusetts for a rally.

Asked if he intended to moderating the event, Killer responded that he would actually not be at the rally since he is "wanted in six states."

Killer has had no trouble, however, enlisting support from other Jersey-based organizers.

Buddy, Jake and Bart were among the first to come on board. Cutting short their Miami Beach vacation, the trio said it was "the least we could do" for a fellow dog.

And in a statement from the windy city, Mr. T-bone was overheard saying "I pity the fool." T-bone went on to comment on what a "stand-up guy" Seamus is, and how Romney had better watch where he steps if he ever sets foot in Chicago.

Dogs United's attorney, Katherine, went to work quickly to see if any laws had been broken.

"Massachusetts animal cruelty laws are very specific on this," she said. "They specifically prohibit anyone from carrying an animal 'in or upon a vehicle, or otherwise, in an unnecessarily cruel or inhuman manner or in a way and manner which might endanger the animal carried thereon.'

"Given the unrestrained lawlessness of the current administration, we certainly don't need another president who would so flagrantly violate state law or the DOGS RULE of law," she said.

In all, it's been a pretty rapid response for a group that relies on howling in the wind -- much like Mitt -- to communicate.

Seamus issued a statement saying he appreciated the show of support, and thinks that his human [Mitt] finally "gets it."

Word has it that for the next family vacation, Seamus has been promised a spot in the back seat and, well ...

Maybe Mitt doesn't get it after all. Yikes!
